My parents went for the tree change when I finished high school. Being more of a city girl, I stayed behind.

I’ve always loved their property though, it’s my home away from home and, of course, the only place where I can receive a healthy dose of mummy love!

Not surprisingly my boys love the farm too. It’s a place where lots of adventures are had and happy memories made.

Tractors are ridden…

 boat races are had…

and animals loved.

This weekend’s adventure involved us becoming co-owners of a small flock of sheep. Fences needed to be put up before they arrived. They boys loved helping.

We have Shaun the ram, 4 ewes and 2 young males.

Naming of the sheep was a hot topic which consequently lead to some serious discussions regarding the fate of some of the sheep.

These aren’t just pets, they will be kept and bred for a purpose – dinner.

The concept of eating animals is one we introduced to our boys early. It’s a simple fact of life on the farm and they have seen both pigs and cows come and go for this purpose.

I was worried the cute little lamb thing was going to be a barrier for acceptance in this case, but so far so good! In fact, Bam Bam was most unimpressed that sheep was not on the menu that night!!

Have you discussed where “meat” comes from with your kids? What age did you broach the subject and how did they react?

  1. Me says:

Love that your boys are learning about country life – so many children have no idea of where food comes from.
    Have a great week !
