Ten years ago we bought our little house. As soon as I saw it I was in love.

It had a cottage feel – low set brick with exposed beams, a big fireplace and bushland all around. The only thing that put me off was the bathroom. But bathrooms can be changed right? The Man promised it would be the first thing we did to the place.

A lot has changed in that 10 years. We’ve rendered the house, built in the carport, extended the deck, and re-landscaped the back and front yards.

Something hasn’t changed, though. You guessed it.

The Bathroom.

We’ve had grand plans. Designs drawn up, money set aside and quotes obtained. But it never seems to happen. There is always SOMETHING in the way.

In fact, the bathroom has not only stayed the same, it has gotten worse.

I know by now, those of you who haven’t been privy to my bathroom angst previously (where have your been??)  are wondering what on earth could be so bad about a bathroom. So, since today is all about the mundane, I’m going to take you on a little virtual tour of the minutia of my bathroom hell.

The most striking feature of this room is the colour scheme. I’m a big fan of red & black. I’m even a fan of retro. Just not in its original condition!

Some other wonderful original features of the room include:

The wall mounted bar heater (aka dusty death trap)

The colour coordinated power switch & toothbrush holders (the towel rails match as well!)

And the delightful exhaust fan that blows directly into our bedroom!

But these original fixtures are NOTHING on the “improvements” that have come with time.

For example, the make-shift linen cupboard which sits next to the now empty hot water system cupboard (which is supposed to be converted into the linen cupboard).

The hole in the wall from the solar hot water installation (*ahem* 3 years ago!)

The tiles that have popped off from the damp as a result of a leaking bathtub.

Wait this one gets better….

Fabulous huh? Fortunately the laundry basket hides this little gem.

Then there are the taps that have been replaced but don’t quite fit properly so are a haven for mold, regardless of how many times you wipe them down.

But my absolute LEAST favourite thing is this:

The leaking plug hole that has been siliconed in. Mold LOVES silicone. Would you bath your kids in this?

No, I didn’t think so!

Needless to say, it’s been a very long standing bone of contention in our house that funds are always diverted away from this most dire situation. Obviously, the Minister of Finances is partial to mold and a cranky wife!!

Ok. Rant Tour over.

Now that you have been privy to the minutia of my bathroom nightmare, I’d love to hear what part of your house you’d give anything to change.

Don’t forget to link up your post to celebrate (or commiserate!) the mundane below ;)

  1. Don’t get me wrong Nee, I’m all for the rock’n'roll Route 66 black, white and red colour scheme, but that’s just wrong. Isn’t it always the way? The things you want to get done first always finish up being done last (or not at all). We’ve been here 11 years and it’s the same story. Hope it’s resolved soon (ish). LOL

It’s the red plug hole that got me. Hilarious. I totally feel your pain. Luckily we are no longer living in our renovators delight. We plan to move back there in the next couple of years, but the bathroom is worse than yours. Seriously. I will post you some pics on IG when we are there for next weekend. Argh.

  3. Wow that is one scary bathroom! I can not believe the effort the previous owners went to for such bad taste!!! As for the crucial renovation you have my sympathies, we too needed to address the bathroom when we bought our house, not just because of its ugliness but complete lack of waterproofing. It eventually got done but not before we tiled the floors, rendered the outside, painted inside, replanted all the gardens blahblahblah ALL things that could have waited.
I hope yours gets dealt with ASAP!!!
