My confession is: I can not cut.

The scissor and paper type cut. You know, basic life skill most preschoolers have mastered? Yeah that. Can’t do it…

That’s right. I can not cut. Well at least not straight. A pair of scissors in my clumsy left-handed fingers is an unwieldy weapon indeed.

In fact, my inability to cut straight extends to other cutting equipment at well. Who on earth can’t cut a straight line with a guiloten? Me!

It has caused much trauma over the years and has hampered my development dramatically in may ways.  I’d even go so far to say career opportunities have been missed because of it.

It is unfortunate (or perhaps not) that the vocation of headsman is not longer pivotal in society.  I really do think I possess many of the attributes suited to such a role e.g. a propensity for feeling stabby and low tolerance for scum bags.

That is, of course, apart from the ability to separate parts at the intended location. I would undoubtably be an armsman, or a shouldersman, at best. I’d never make headsman.

I will also never be a butcher, a seamstress, a contestant on MasterChef or one of those people who use a clapper board on a movie set.

I’d loose a finger for sure.

I worry that this debilitating affliction is genetic and will effect my left-handed son. Fortunately society has become more understanding and supportive of the gifted left-handed and now in the craft boxes at school there are left-handed scissors. He does struggle a little but there is still hope for his future. For me, alas there is none.

Speaking of cuts, I’m going in for a little surgical procedure later in the week so will be taking a little break from the blog until I recover. Keep your fingers crossed for me that the surgeon does not have the same issues with cutting that I do!

What mundane task causes you grief?

  1. Oh really Nee? That’s too funny. So no Edward Scissorhands roles for you coming up then? LOL I feel pretty useless when it comes to man things like mowing and drilling and car stuff. Must’ve rubbed off from the ex! LOL Good luck with the procedure. Hopefully I’ll be seeing you soon.

LOL! You have lost your calling to be a clapper board dude!
I am terrible at using the can opener. Without fail, I cut my finger trying to get the lid off with the sharp edges. Ugh!

HA! I had to buy a special can opener for that very reason!! It’s a bit tricky to use but it cuts on the inside edge of the can so not sharp bits :P Thanks for linking up hun xx

I’m kind of relieved to read your post because …me too! Not only am I a disaster with a pair of scissors but so are my minions. The teacher actually brought up the fact that my 6 yr old twins apparently have the fine motor skills of 3 yr olds (we’re working on it!).

    Take care of yourself.

Maybe we could start a support group? Crappy Cutters Anonymous ;) Good luck with the fine motor skill development. My eldest (nearly 6) needs work in that department too. Handwriting is particularly bad. Ironically, manages excellently with a pair of chopsticks at a sushi train though! xxx

  4. I am just so relieved you were talking about scissors because when I saw your title in my reader I nearly swallowed my tongue in fear of what I was going to read.
i hope all goes well with your procedure hun and that you are up and bouncing around in no time. xxx

Now I’m a little freaked out. My youngest son is left-handed and I’ve heard everything from “it will have no impact on his life at all” to “his life is now ruined” (and thank you to the very helpful shopper behind me at the checkout queue for that inspiring gem). Unlike you though, he is an inspirational scissor cutter, recently practicing on the hair of his sister’s doll and … my bed sheets. Awesome. Hope your op goes well!

Haha! I’m glad he’s embracing his ability to cut!! Trust me – his life is not ruined by being a lefty. I’m a bad example as I would of made a un-co righty as well :P It’s a sure sign he will be very creative and super intelligent!
