I always thought sight would be the one faculty I would be completely lost without.

However, over the last few months I’ve come to appreciate how much those flappy bits of skin & cartilage on the side of my head shape how I perceive and receive and function in the world.

My ears have been blocked on & off for the last 3months and more recently since my surgery have been blocked to the point of excruciating pain.

Currently, they oscillate between blocked completely, leaving me with the sensation of being completely submerged in water, to extreme sensitivity to the slightest noise.

Neither sensation is pleasant, especially when I am in the presence of the very and ever noisy menagerie.

I also experience lots of dizziness and nausea as my equilibrium is, well… not equal.

I have a whole new respect for the humble ear and the role it plays in interpreting our environment, tolerating, filtering and tuning into the constant cacophony that assaults it everyday.

I also have a much great appreciation for the sound of silence!

What sense do you think you wouldn’t be able to live without?

You’ve got such a gorgeous vista around you, Rachel, sight would be a definite loss for you!! (also make running without tripping more difficult ;P)

I feel your pain. I have suffered from major ear problems my whole life to the point that I am permanently deaf in one ear & I have lost a lot of hearing in the other. Can I ask if you have ever used ear candles? They are the only thing that give me any relief. To me, they are a miracle! (no, this is not a sponsored comment! LOL!) They truly work & without them, my head would never leave the pillow. I hope you get better soon. xx

It’s funny you should mention candles – my in laws have recently tried them. Apparently my EAR itself is ok its some tube that runs from the inner ear to my sinus that is blocked. Would the candles still work you think?

How horrible Née. Ears can be so painful. I think sight would be the hardest adjustment, but all senses are important. I have worked with many people who have lost their sense of smell through brain injury and not being able to enjoy food has a massive impact. Hope you are feeling better soon. x

I definitely concur with the sense of smell + food relationship. I’ve lost 2.5kg in the last 2 weeks because of that very reason. Probably should look at blocking my nose permanently ;)
